Zug and Geneva compared

The financing environment of the traders of Zug differs from that of their competitors in Geneva. Geneva has a concentration of banks with specialised commodity finance departments, a professional community of trade finance specialists and a long tradition in the field, which the Geneva volume describes. Zug has none of these to the same extent. Its traders are financed by banks in Geneva, Zurich and abroad. The largest among them, above all Glencore, finance themselves in the international capital markets.

The difference reflects the composition of the two clusters. The Geneva cluster includes many medium-sized traders in oil and agricultural products that depend on transactional and borrowing base financing from banks. The Zug cluster is dominated by a group that is large enough to finance itself through bonds, syndicated facilities and its own cash flow, and by specialised traders in metals, minerals and soft commodities with their own banking relationships. The retreat of the European banks from commodity finance after 2020 affected the Geneva cluster more directly, while the Zug cluster was exposed above all through its medium-sized members.
