The Wealthy Residents — conclusion

Conclusion of Chapter I

Zug is one of the three cantons with the highest average wealth per taxpayer in Switzerland. Its low income and wealth taxes, its taxation according to expenditure for wealthy foreigners, which applied to about 143 taxpayer units in 2021, and its exemption of spouses and descendants from inheritance tax attract wealthy families from Switzerland and abroad. The rejection of the federal inheritance tax initiative in November 2025 confirmed the stability of this framework. The arrival of wealthy families brings revenue and increases the canton's contribution to the fiscal equalisation. At the same time, it sharpens the scarcity of housing and fuels the political debate about the fairness of the canton's policy. The professionals who manage the wealth of these families are the subject of Chapter II.
