From Philipp Brothers to Marc Rich (1957–1994) — conclusion
Conclusion of Chapter I
The commodity trade came to Zug with Philipp Brothers in 1957 and grew to global importance with Marc Rich + Co. from 1974. Attracted by the canton's tax regime and its administration, both companies used the protection that Swiss neutrality and Swiss law offered to trade across the lines drawn by the sanctions and embargoes of other states. The indictment of Marc Rich in 1983, his life as a fugitive in Zug and his pardon in 2001 made the canton internationally notorious. The sale of his company to its managers in 1994 and its renaming as Glencore opened a new chapter, which Chapter II describes.
