English in the local economy
The international economy has carried English into the local economy of the canton. Estate agents advertise apartments in English to reach international buyers and tenants. Many restaurants offer bilingual menus. Retailers, hairdressers, fitness studios and childcare providers offer their services in English to reach the international community. Craftsmen and small businesses find that customers from the international companies expect to be served in English. Many of them have adapted.
The hospitality sector depends particularly on English. Hotels in Zug serve business travellers from the international companies and visitors to conferences. Their staff work in English as a matter of course. The staff themselves are often foreign and may speak English better than German. For the local population, the spread of English in shops and restaurants is the most visible sign of the international economy, more visible than the offices of the trading houses or the holding companies. It is in the daily encounter at the counter or the table that residents experience whether their canton still speaks their language.
