Education, research and talent

Read the PDF edition (1 page)

The canton's future depends on its ability to attract and develop talent. It can act in several ways. It can strengthen its public schools, including bilingual programmes in English and German that serve both local and international children. It can support the expansion of the international schools in coordination with the public system. It can expand vocational training in the fields needed by its international companies, such as finance, logistics, information technology and life sciences. It can cooperate with the universities and universities of applied sciences of the region, including the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Rotkreuz and the institutions in Zurich and Lucerne.1

At the federal level, the canton can advocate for easier admission of specialists from outside Europe, for simpler procedures for work permits and for participation in European research programmes. It can support the recognition of foreign qualifications and the integration of partners of international employees into the labour market. These measures would help the canton to attract the specialists its companies need and to retain them for longer periods, which would also improve their integration into local society.
