Trade finance in figures

Worked example. A Geneva bank devotes CHF 4 billion of facilities to transactional trade finance, spread across 60 traders. The average turnover of transactions is 45 days, which represents around CHF 32 billion of financed flows per year. At an average margin of 0.4 per cent per transaction and fees of 0.1 per cent, the bank earns around CHF 16 million in interest margin and CHF 8 million in fees per year, or CHF 24 million, against staff, compliance and systems costs of CHF 14 million and a capital charge which, at an effective requirement of 10 per cent on exposures risk-weighted at 50 per cent, ties up CHF 200 million. Lower than that of wealth management, the return on this capital, around 5 per cent after costs and before losses, explains the caution of the major banks and the interest of less constrained players.
