The financial centre in figures

Read the PDF edition (2 pages)

The data published by the Fondation Genève Place Financière make it possible to measure the weight of the financial sector within the Geneva economy.

IndicatorValue
Jobs in the financial sectormore than 38,000
Share of cantonal gross domestic product12.9 %
Companies in the financial sectoraround 8,400
Banks present in Geneva121 in 2014, 80 in 2024
Banking jobs19,415 in 2014, 17,639 in 2024
Annual economic surveysince 2002

The data are drawn from the Fondation’s own presentation and from the reports on its surveys.1 They show that the financial sector remains a pillar of the cantonal economy despite the consolidation of the banking industry. The fall in the number of banks has been accompanied by growth among the other players: independent wealth managers, trading houses, financial service providers and technology companies.

These figures should be read with caution. Definitions of the financial sector vary from one source to another, and the employment figures cover a wide range of activities. The contribution of commodity trading, which the Fondation counts among the pillars of the financial centre, will be analysed separately in Part G, which will show the considerable discrepancies between the various measures available.
