Checklist: using commodity trading statistics

  • State the source of each figure: Federal Statistical Office, National Bank, umbrella association, private study.
  • Indicate the concept measured: value added, gross receipts, turnover, profit, direct or indirect jobs.
  • Define the perimeter: commodity trading in the strict sense, merchanting, the cluster including services.
  • Mention the reference year and the state of prices and margins.
  • Avoid comparing figures that rest on different concepts or perimeters without making this explicit.
  • Take into account the international structure of the groups and where their value added is located.
