Checklist: structuring a philanthropic commitment

  • Define the objectives, the causes and the time horizon of the commitment, as well as the role of the family members.
  • Choose the appropriate structure: own foundation, fund under the umbrella of a hosting foundation, direct donations or impact investment.
  • Verify the conditions for tax exemption and the deductibility of donations in the countries concerned, and the absence of any consideration flowing back to the donors.
  • Organise sound governance, with a competent board, rules for preventing conflicts of interest and regular accountability.
  • Define the investment policy for the foundation’s assets and its consistency with the purpose pursued.
  • Put in place a method for evaluating the projects supported and measuring their effects.
  • Document the origin of the funds dedicated to the commitment and comply with anti-money-laundering rules and sanctions regimes, in particular for support paid abroad.
