Checklist: preparing an investment in Africa from Geneva

  • Choose the country and the sector on the basis of an analysis of political stability, the legal framework, infrastructure and demand, taking account of the diversity of the continent.
  • Identify local partners and verify their integrity, their links with those in power and their reputation.
  • Structure the investment using, where they exist, investment protection treaties, public guarantees and blended-finance instruments.
  • Provide for dispute settlement mechanisms, in particular arbitration, as well as protection against political risks.
  • Build the compliance requirements — the fight against corruption and money laundering, sanctions, human rights, the environment — into the project from the design stage.
  • Involve skills drawn from the diaspora and from the networks of International Geneva in the preparation and the monitoring.
  • Define a long investment horizon and indicators of local effect — jobs, transfer of skills, value added on the ground.
