Checklist: defining the language policy of a Geneva institution

  • Determine the internal working languages and the languages of communication with clients, the authorities and the public, guaranteeing French for local relations.
  • Identify the language skills required for each function — French, English, German, the languages of the clientele — and build them into recruitment profiles.
  • Offer language training to staff, in particular in German for functions that deal with the federal institutions.
  • Ensure that documentation intended for French-speaking clients exists in French, and that multilingual documents contain a prevailing-language clause.
  • Ensure that institutional communication and relations with the cantonal authorities are conducted in French.
  • Promote multilingualism as an element of the corporate culture and of the institution’s offering.
