Checklist: choosing an independent asset manager or a family office

  • Verify the FINMA licence and the affiliation with a supervisory organisation, or, for a single family office, the legal analysis justifying the absence of a licence.
  • Examine the size, financial soundness and durability of the structure, in particular its dependence on a few key persons and the planning of their succession.
  • Analyse the remuneration structure, in particular the existence of retrocessions and how they are treated.
  • Assess the quality of the custodian banks proposed and the terms negotiated with them.
  • Check the compliance, risk-management and data-protection procedures.
  • Verify the affiliation with an ombudsman body and the arrangements for resolving disputes.
  • Examine the actual scope of the services offered against the family’s needs: management, consolidation, planning, governance, philanthropy.
