Checklist: building sound philanthropic governance

  • Define clearly the mission of the foundation or philanthropic fund, as well as the intended beneficiaries.
  • Organise collegial governance, with a division of responsibilities between the board, the management and the supervisory bodies.
  • Keep regular accounts and submit them to an independent audit, in accordance with legal requirements and the expectations of donors.
  • Assess the actual effect of the support granted and adapt the strategy in the light of the results observed.
  • Prevent conflicts of interest between founders, board members, wealth managers and beneficiaries.
  • Ensure that financial flows comply with anti-money laundering rules and sanctions regimes, in particular for support paid abroad.
  • Secure the transmission of the foundation’s mission and values from one generation of leaders to the next.
