Checklist: assessing the soundness of a family bank

  • Examine the ownership structure and the rules for transfer between generations, in particular the conditions for admitting new partners.
  • Verify the separation between the partners’ assets and those of the bank, as well as the effective liability of the partners.
  • Analyse the investment policy applied to clients and its consistency with the objective of capital preservation.
  • Assess the diversification of the bank’s income across client categories, geographical regions and services.
  • Evaluate the quality of governance: internal checks and balances, independent audit, management of family conflicts of interest.
  • Examine the house’s ability to adapt to regulatory and technological change without losing its culture.
