Checklist: assessing the political risk of a jurisdiction for the custody of assets

  • Examine the stability of the political institutions and the degree to which the population supports the system of government.
  • Identify the foreign powers likely to exert influence or pressure on the jurisdiction, and the instruments available to them.
  • Assess the risk of exceptional fiscal measures, confiscations or restrictions on the free disposal of assets.
  • Gauge the soundness of the currency and the risk of monetary depreciation.
  • Verify the legal protection of deposited assets, in particular in the event of the insolvency of the custodian institution.
  • Provide for a spread of assets across several jurisdictions where the size of the estate and the client’s objectives justify it, in compliance with the applicable tax and reporting obligations.
