Checklist: assessing the governance of a growing bank

  • Verify that the growth strategy rests on a realistic analysis of the risks and of the resources available.
  • Examine the composition and independence of the board of directors, as well as the separation between supervision and management.
  • Check the risk limits set for large transactions, equity holdings and exposures to a single debtor.
  • Analyse the liquidity policy and the institution’s capacity to cope with substantial withdrawals.
  • Assess the links between the executives, the shareholders and political office-holders, and the risks of conflicts of interest that arise from them.
  • Make sure that the publication of accounts and the information given to shareholders and depositors are complete and reliable.
