Checklist: assessing an African business relationship as a whole

  • Place the country in context by reference to governance indices, international reports, sanctions regimes and asset freezes ordered by the Federal Council.
  • Identify the status of the client or counterparty — politically exposed person, state-owned enterprise, private company — and its links to those in power.
  • Document the origin of the funds or goods with verifiable supporting evidence.
  • List the intermediaries and check their identity, their services, their remuneration and the destination of the payments.
  • Analyse the political scenarios and plan the safeguards and the course of action to be followed in the event of change.
  • Verify compliance with due diligence obligations concerning minerals, child labour, payment transparency and anti-money laundering.
  • Assess the contribution of the relationship to the country’s development and its consistency with the commitments of the institution and of the financial centre.
