Checklist: assessing a network of correspondent banks

  • Identify the financial centres covered by the network and the function each of them performs in the institution’s operations.
  • Assess the financial strength and reputation of each correspondent, as well as the supervisory rules to which it is subject.
  • Verify the anti-money laundering and sanctions screening procedures applied by the correspondents, in line with the requirements governing correspondent banking relationships.
  • Measure the institution’s dependence on a few correspondents or a few financial centres, and provide for alternative arrangements.
  • Ensure the rapid and secure circulation of information among the members of the network, while respecting the rules on confidentiality and data protection.
  • Review the network periodically in the light of political, regulatory and economic developments in the countries concerned.
