Checklist: analysing the profitability of a wealth management institution

  • Break down revenues by source and measure their sensitivity to markets, interest rates and pricing.
  • Analyse the cost structure, distinguishing fixed from variable costs, and calculate the cost-income ratio.
  • Track net new money inflows and their origin, distinguishing healthy growth from the acquisition of risky clients.
  • Compare the gross margin with that of competitors and anticipate the effect of pricing transparency.
  • Assess the investment required in technology and compliance, and how it is to be financed.
  • Identify the institution’s strategic model and check the consistency between that model, its size and its resources.
  • Examine the inherited risks, in particular tax and legal risks, that may weigh on the value of the institution in the event of a combination.
