Checklist: analysing an exposure to sovereign risk
- Measure the share of the assets exposed to each state, directly or indirectly, through bonds, bank deposits, guarantees and counterparties.
- Compare the yields offered by the issuer with those of its peers and analyse the reasons for the spread.
- Examine the state’s total debt, its implicit commitments, the structure of its maturities and its dependence on foreign creditors.
- Assess the strength of the fiscal institutions, the independence of the central bank and the quality of the information published.
- Build political risks, sanctions risks and precedents of restructuring into the analysis.
- Set concentration limits and review them regularly in the light of developments in the situation of each issuer.
