Roche, Novartis, Syngenta, Lonza: the Industrial Base — conclusion
Conclusion
The industrial base of the Basel life sciences consists of two global pharmaceutical groups, Roche and Novartis, an agricultural science group in Chinese state ownership, Syngenta, a contract manufacturer with roots in the Valais, Lonza, and a second tier of listed and private companies in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical technology and chemicals. Since the merger of 1996, the industry has reshaped itself through a long series of spin-offs that created new listed companies and concentrated the large groups on innovative medicines and diagnostics. Its weight in exports, employment, tax revenue and the Swiss stock market makes it a financial pillar of Basel and of Switzerland. The Schweizerhalle disaster of 1986 showed the risks of the chemical industry and led to the Major Accidents Ordinance, the Rhine Action Programme and a strict liability regime for environmental damage, which together shaped the modern regulatory framework.
The concentration of economic power in a few groups gives the canton a strong interest in their success and makes it vulnerable to their decisions. How the groups finance themselves, how they use the capital markets and how they return capital to their shareholders through dividends, buybacks and spin-offs determines much of what the financial centre does with them. Chapter II therefore turns to the corporate finance of the pharmaceutical groups.
