This glossary serves practitioners who work across the three languages of the Dreiland, where Swiss, German and French advisers, clients and authorities meet every day. It collects about 440 terms from the fields that the main text covers, beginning with banking, financial market regulation, anti-money laundering and tax. Further entries concern trusts and foundations, succession and matrimonial property, insurance and pensions, corporate law, civil procedure and debt enforcement, customs, export control and sanctions. Life sciences regulation, intellectual property, crypto-assets and digital assets, the international institutions based in Basel and a few words of local life complete the list. The selection follows the usage of this book, which allows readers to trace a German or French expression from a footnote back to the English text.
The German column gives the Swiss legal form first, such as Verwaltungsrat, Revisionsstelle or Betreibungsamt, since these are the terms of Swiss federal and cantonal law. Where German usage differs, the German-German equivalent follows in parentheses with the marker "DE:", sometimes with the addition "approx." for institutions that correspond only roughly. The French column gives the Swiss terms, such as conseil d'administration, LSFin or impôt anticipé, and marks the usage of France with "FR:" where it departs. English entries marked "CH" refer to Swiss institutions that have no exact counterpart elsewhere, so that their English name remains a description of the Swiss concept. Official Swiss terms follow the usage of TERMDAT, the terminology database of the Federal Chancellery, where that usage is known. As Part J, Chapter IV, explains, a word that looks equivalent may designate an institution with different legal effects in the neighbouring country. The glossary is therefore a starting point for drafting and translation, which should always be followed by a check of the legal concept behind each term.
